Sexual Health and Reproductive Rights

HFAW’s Work in Nyamira, Kisii, and Kajiado Counties on Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights

Hope Foundation for African Women (HFAW) is dedicated to advancing sexual and reproductive health rights in marginalized and rural communities across Nyamira, Kisii, and Kajiado counties in Kenya where FGM and GBV are rampant.

In these counties, HFAW implements comprehensive, community-led programs that focus on awareness creation, capacity building, advocacy, and linkages to service providers through the Community Health Promoters and local facilities aimed at improving the health and dignity of women, girls, and vulnerable groups.

Key Focus Areas

  • Ending Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Child Marriage: Through community dialogues, alternative rites of passage, and rescue support, HFAW fosters safer environments for girls to thrive and pursue education.
  • Promoting Adolescent and Youth Sexual Reproductive Health: Peer education, school-based clubs, and forums equip women and girls to make informed health decisions.
  • Enhancing Access to SRHR Services: Through partnerships with health facilities and sensitization workshops, HFAW ensures inclusive services—especially in Kajiado’s Ongata Rongai sub county hospital for women with disabilities.
  • Community Empowerment and Advocacy: HFAW trains women and youth as champions and paralegals to report and address reproductive rights violations.

Menstrual Hygiene Management in Schools

HFAW is breaking taboos, addressing period poverty, and supporting adolescent girls with reusable pads, hygiene kits, and education sessions. Teachers and clubs are trained to support menstruating students, reduce stigma, and engage parents.

Impact Highlights:
  • School Attendance: More girls are attending school during their menstrual periods.
  • Stigma Reduction: Joint sessions for boys and girls improve empathy and reduce teasing.
  • Empowerment: Girls now manage their menstruation with dignity and confidence.
