End Female Genital Mutilation in Nyamira County
HFAW staff conducts monthly school-based advocacy sessions to address Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and teenage pregnancy among learners — applying a continuous engagement approach that builds trust, reinforces prevention messages, and supports long-term behaviour and attitude change.
Mwancha Comprehensive School, Getare Primary School, Rianyamage Primary, Magwagwa Primary, Riomego Primary, Magena Marabu Primary, Ekegoro Primary, and many others across Nyamira County.
Rather than one-time sensitization events, the monthly model allows progressive learning, repeated myth-busting, and sustained dialogue with both students and teachers. Facilitators consistently emphasize that FGM is a form of Gender-Based Violence and a violation of girls’ rights and dignity. Discussions also highlight the strong link between FGM, early marriage, school dropout, and teenage pregnancy.
Interactive Sessions with Learners
Learners actively participate through guided discussions and open question-and-answer forums, where they raise real-life concerns related to peer pressure, sexuality, pregnancy prevention, unsafe abortion, coercion, and harmful cultural rites of passage.
The repeated monthly engagement creates safe spaces for more honest conversations over time, with learners showing increased confidence in speaking out, questioning harmful norms, and supporting peers at risk. Cultural myths that portray FGM as beneficial or necessary are consistently and clinically challenged.
Growing Impact Across Schools
Across the schools reached, the monthly advocacy approach has led to steadily improving awareness, stronger critical thinking among learners, and growing willingness to report threats or abuse to trusted adults. Teachers and school administrations have remained supportive and engaged throughout.
Many students have emerged as peer champions who commit to spreading anti-FGM and anti-teenage pregnancy messages within their schools and communities. Continuous engagement remains central to sustaining impact and advancing the shared goal of ending FGM.
