On 22 March 2025, the grounds of Nakeel Stadium were filled with joy, determination, and teamwork as 113 children from special units in Nakeel, Ongata Rongai, and Nkaimurunya Primary Schools came together for an inclusive sports day organized by Hope Foundation for African Women (HFAW) with support from the Embassy of France in Kenya under the PISCCA Project.
The event brought together 55 girls and 58 boys living with different disabilities for a day designed to celebrate ability, build confidence, and strengthen community inclusion. Through adaptive games such as wheelchair races, relays, tug-of-war, and obstacle courses, the children demonstrated resilience, teamwork, and joy in every activity.
Community leaders, educators, caregivers, and families joined the celebration, reinforcing the importance of creating safe and inclusive spaces where every child can thrive. Alongside the sports activities, HFAW also shared messages on gender-based violence prevention and child protection, ensuring that inclusion goes hand in hand with safety and dignity.
“For the first time, my child felt equal and celebrated. I could see the confidence growing in them as they played alongside others.” — Parent, Nkaimurunya Primary School
One of the most memorable moments of the day was a mixed-ability football match where students from all three schools played side by side. The focus was not on winning, but on collaboration, confidence, and belonging. Every goal and every attempt was met with cheers from teammates and spectators alike.
For many of the children, this was their first opportunity to participate in a large-scale sporting event. With support from the PISCCA Project, the children received adaptive sports equipment, meals, transport, medals, and learning materials. Girls also received sanitary supplies, while boys received essential hygiene items — thoughtful support that ensured every child felt valued and included.
As the day came to a close, each child proudly received a medal, book, and pen — symbols of courage, perseverance, and limitless potential.
This event was more than a sports day. It was a powerful reminder that when children living with disabilities are given opportunity, encouragement, and inclusive spaces, they shine.
